Even Jon Stewart Didn't Know? The International Day for Tolerance

I just can't believe someone as astute as Jon Stewart, and his writers would miss this one;
Think of the opportunities to ream every pundit and pollitician, every media mogul and who knows who else - Isn't Anyone Celebrating Tolerance Day today? How embarrassing it's an internationally important date with a 10 year Anniversary and no one seems to know it exists?

Gee - Is this; The new definition of Tolerance?

Hey honest - I didn't make this up I found it on the Earth Calendar website and just followed the links... remarkable really!

Today is...

International Day for Tolerance

(From The United Nations)

16 November

"In 1996, The General Assembly invited Menber States to observe the International Day for Tolerance on 16 November with activities directed toward both educational establishments and the wider public. resolution 51/95 of 12 December. This action came in the wake of the United Nations Year for Tolerance, 1995, proclaimed by the Assembly in 1993 (resolution 48/126). The Year had been declared on the initiative of the General Conference of UNESCO; on 16 November 1995, the UNESCO member States had adopted the Declaration of Principles on Tolerance and Follow-up Plan of Action for the Year. The 2005 World Summit Outcome document, outlines the commitment of Heads of State and Government to advance human welfare, freedom and progress everywhere, as well as to encourage tolerance, respect, dialogue and cooperation among different cultures, civilizations and peoples."

If you're interested in checking out the UN; their website is highly accessible to the average person - The United Nations; they really should be commended for providing so much information to the general public. There are fabulous links also; sites such as The World Bank, the WTO etc..

 So this day was proclaimed 10 years ago - this is already it's 10th Anniversary and I honestly cannot recall ever having heard of it before!
I am somewhat frustrated that this day isn't printed on my wall calendar - no-one in the news media in Canada or the US are talking about it. There are no projects in action I'm aware of and there are no discount sales or "Happy Tolerance Day" cards at the store! Think of all those lost opportunities, my, they have done this day a great dis-service; those who print calendars and greeting cards!

Ah ha! There's my inspiration for the day... How does one symbolize something like tolerance? Cool, this gives me something to tweak my creative juices!

Any ideas yourself?

Don't be surprised when you get an HTD card from me! Ha!
