Pelosi elected first woman speaker

Pelosi elected first woman speaker

(the above link and photo from CNN.com - Breaking News)

As I write, the new speaker of the house has been sworn into Congress in Washington, DC, USA.
Unprecdented in American history, she becomes the first woman to hold such a high seat in government, winning with 233 votes among her peers.
A day in history that, Ms. Pelosi suggests; "breaks the marble ceiling" and means, "the sky's the limit for our daughters and our grandaughters". Something women have waited over 200 years to achieve. Also Unprecedented, the children of all congressional representatives were invited to the front of the House to stand with the speaker and to touch the gavel which will be Madam Speaker Pelosi's new tool in her political arsenal.
After a brief and touching moment with the children she cracked that gavel and declared her "call to order" and then she swore in the new Congress en masse.
I am thrilled to witness this moment in history, having lived in the States in my formative years, attending high school in the late 60's and early 70's when girls weren't even allowed to wear slacks to school until we stood up for ourselves and demanded that right. (In the cold North Eastern state, upper NY state, there was nothing "fashionable" in our demand - we just wanted to be warm during the cold months that plagued our region.) When earth day was first initiated and before environmental sustainability and responsibility became the buzzwords of Wall Street!
Wow!
What a day for women and what a promise for the people of the US! I wish her well and I hope she can rise above the partisanship, the politics and the glamour and lead her Congressional counterparts in formulating the policies and laws that will truly make her grandchildren and the people she serves, her current home city of San Francisco and her hometown city of Baltimore proud!

Good Luck Madam Speaker and Godspeed in your quest!
